To uplift the agriculture sector, the Maharashtra government has decided upon a new policy that shall be focussing to promote indigenous seeds in place of genetically-modified seeds. This policy shall become functional in the next year, after studying the measures adopted by the other Indian states to record healthy growth of crops. The states that saw tremendous growth in the agriculture sector in India are namely Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Gujarat.
The policy that Maharashtra government is going to frame shall also concentrate on promoting agriculture-allied businesses that farmers can venture in during the times of draught. Since climatic factors like global warming affect the agricultural produce, the cropping pattern can be changed to cater to these factors and thus benefit the farmers.
In addition, an expert committee shall be formed, that shall include the scientists from agriculture universities from different Indian states. Their main emphasis shall be to visit the Indian states having high agricultural growth rate!
In the last fiscal Andhra Pradesh saw a growth rate of 8.40 percent while Karnataka saw a growth rate of 7.80 percent in agriculture. Drip irrigation system shall be implemented on different crops in Maharashtra, taking in view the increased productivity due to this. It also helps in saving a lot of resources like water and electricity, due to its definite working structure. The agriculture scientists and even the Maharashtra agriculture minister, Mr. Pandurang Fundkar has understood the efficiency of drip irrigation system in India.
