As a matter of fact, India has over 145 million farm holdings. In order to increase the farm output on these agriculture lands, the farmers tend to increase the usage of fertilizers. But challenges arise when they use fertilizers without adequate knowledge about their usage. This results in a decrease in the total productivity from the land. There are other challenges as well which are faced by farmers in India, like the lack of awareness regarding modern irrigation facilities. Knowing these shortcomings, the government is keen on introducing a soil health card for the small and marginal farmers.
As per reports, the government shall spend Rs. 568 crore in the coming three years in this direction. Steps shall be taken to bring latest irrigation facilities to the sixty-five percent of cultivable land which is devoid of proper means of irrigation. Another idea is to enhance and build the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK’s) that shall aim at implementing the scientific and improved techniques to the land. The expenditure of the funds on the soil health laboratories has increased over the passage of time as well. In this scenario, every farmer shall be given a soil health card. It shall take into preview the situation of the farmers as well; so that the farmers don’t sell their crops at the rate which is lower than the minimum support prices.
A better coordination is expected to be formed between the KVK’s and agricultural extension officers. Their numbers have increased from 18,000 to 26,000. This is done in order to meet the crises of lack of manpower (officers, scientists) and moreover, the required infrastructure in the country! The government also showed interest in developing e-marketing network to streamline the agricultural sector in different states of India.
